What you should know before you go into a sauna

Before you start a sauna session, pay attention to your health. People suffering from heart diseases, high blood pressure or other conditions should consult a doctor, as the high temperature may pose a serious risk to them. It is also important not to use the sauna on an empty stomach. Eat a light meal that will provide your body with energy and make sure your body is properly hydrated. Dehydration can make you feel weak and from there it’s an easy road to fainting.

How to use the sauna?

But first… hygiene!

Always take a shower before entering a sauna. Washing off sweat, cosmetics or dirt from your body will prevent the spread of bacteria and keep the sauna clean. Also, remember to dry your body thoroughly with a towel.

Towels are a must!

One of the most important rules of saunas concerns hygiene. In a sauna, you should sit or lie down on a towel – and with your whole body, including your feet. This isn’t only a matter of comfort, but also of keeping the common area clean.

What’s the deal with clothing and accessories in a sauna?

Swimwear isn’t the best choice for most saunas, as artificial materials can make it difficult to sweat and cause the body to overheat. If you don’t want to go in naked, wrap yourself in a towel or use a covering made from cotton.

Leave the flip-flops, drinks and jewelery in a locker Leave your flip-flops before entering – plastic heats up quickly, plus it carries contaminants. Drinks are best consumed before or after the session, as high temperatures can release harmful substances from plastic bottles. Jewelry should also be removed, as it can cause serious burns.

Now the rules – how to sauna properly?

The following are the most important rules of saunas, which will allow you to fully enjoy the benefits while taking care of your comfort and safety.

Session time

Beginners start with short sessions of 5 to 10 minutes. Those who are more advanced can increase the time to 15-20 minutes, but it’s always a good idea to listen to your body. If you feel unwell, it is better to leave the sauna.

Rest between sessions

After each session, take a break and give your body time to cool down. It’s a good idea to take a shower, or just lie down and relax. The ideal time for a break is 15-20 minutes. This will allow your body to return to its stable, normal temperature.

Hydration

Water is a must! Your body will lose a lot of fluids, so you need to replenish them after each session. It’s best to drink water, isotonic drinks or herbal teas for a faster recovery. Avoid alcohol, which can cause dehydration and weaken the body.

And when you’re done?

After your last sauna session, take some extra time to rest. Usually 30 minutes is enough to give your body a full opportunity to recover. Avoid quick movements and intense exercise – give yourself time to calm down. This is the perfect time for relaxation or even a massage or meditation.
